Empathy – Approaches from Literature, History and Medicine
Empathy has become omnipresent in public discourse. It plays a major role in history, literature, philosophy and also in medicine, where it is sometimes perceived as a panacea. Empathy is immanent to historical observation as it is to literature and the arts. It relies on the imagination to transcend the limitations of one's viewpoint. It encourages readers and audiences to go beyond the condition we commonly denote as reality, and to experiment with taking up roles and trying to see with the eyes of another. This interdisciplinary workshop will explore the manifold intersections of empathy in history, medicine and literature, its common grounds, its cross-fertilizing potential as well as its creative incongruences.
