The Syrian Refugee Crisis from a Cross-Cultural Perspective

Referentin: Prof. Daniela Dimitrova, Ph.D. | Moderation: Dr. Viorela Dan (LMU)

19.11.2019 um 14:15 Uhr

The Syrian refugee crisis is considered the worst humanitarian crisis in modern history. Many European countries have been deeply affected by the crisis and the media coverage of migration across Europe has skyrocketed as a result. This research talk will focus on national media performance through a multi-method approach in order to interrogate how the refugee crisis was covered by the news media in the immediate aftermath of the Syrian civil war. Using framing as a theoretical base, the research employs a process model of media framing called frame-building. The results of a quantitative content analysis are supplemented by critical discourse analysis, which positions the media narratives within a specific historical and cultural context. Understanding the media framing of refugees can ultimately help us understand people's perceptions of refugees and migrants and their acceptance in the society at large.

Daniela Dimitrova ist Professorin an der Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication der Iowa State University und derzeit Visiting Fellow am CAS.
