Institutionalizing and Identity Formation in Independent-Christian Movement in

Internationaler Workshop unter Leitung von Dr. Ciprian Burlacioiu und Dr. Adrian Hermann (LMU).

The emergence of new forms of independent indigenous Christianity in Africa and Asia around 1900 resulted in a further pluralization of the religious scene. These developments led to shifting affiliations on both personal and institutional levels. Indigenous Christians struggled with the missionary legacy and in the course of their life expressed affiliation to different missionary and non-missionary churches, variously adjusting their religious identities. Taking two case studies from South Africa and the Philippines as a starting point, the workshop aims to discuss the pattern(s) and consequences of consecutive shifts in personal and institutional religious identity as part of a prehistory of the "shifting of centers of gravity" in 20th century Global Christianity.
