Democratic Horizons: What Value Change Reveals about the Future of Democracy
Referent: Prof. Dr. Christian Welzel | Moderation: Prof. Dr. Uwe Sunde (LMU)

After decades of democratic euphoria during the Third Wave of Democratization (Huntington), the momentary recession of democracy around the globe fuels an overwhelming gloom in scholarly views of democracy's future. Christian Welzel counters this surge of gloom in the prevalent views of democracy's prospects. Specifically, he argues that rising illiberal populism in Western democracies is a temporary reaction of traditionalist older cohorts to the increasingly emancipatory drive of the younger generations. Equally important, the younger generations' emancipative values suggest a strengthening, not a weakening, of democratic legitimacy in the future.
Christian Welzel ist Professor für Politische Kulturforschung an der Leuphana Universität Lüneburg.
