Class 2 CRISPR/Cas effector nucleases are abundant in prokaryotes. In exploring this largely uncharacterised diversity of Class 2 nucleases, Virginijus Šikšnys and his group have identified a large number of novel CRISPR nucleases that could expand the genome editing toolbox.
Virginijus Šikšnys ist Professor am Institut für Biotechnologie an der Universität Vilnius und war maßgeblich an der Entdeckung von CRISPR/Cas beteiligt.
