Studying Water Uptake by Black Carbon-Containing Particles; Why, How, and so What?

Referent: Joshua P. Schwarz, Ph.D. | Moderation: Prof. Dr. Bernadett Weinzierl

16.06.2015 um 17:15 Uhr

Black carbon (BC) aerosol is a major short-lived climate pollutant that affects the atmosphere via many different mechanisms. Presently, BC’s forcing is highly uncertain, in large part due to difficulties modeling its geographic and vertical distributions and optical properties. These difficulties depend on the impact of internal mixtures with BC on its removal and on its optical properties. In turn, the degree of internal mixing depends on water uptake under ambient conditions by the materials in contact with the BC. Joshua Schwarz will present early scientific results of his research on this topic, and speak about their implications.

Joshua P. Schwarz ist Wissenschaftler am NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory in Boulder/Colorado, USA. Im Sommersemester 2015 hält er sich als Visiting Fellow am CAS auf.
