Theism and Atheism in Hume's "Dialogues": A Question of Words?

Referent: Prof. Gianni Paganini| Moderation: Prof. Dr. Eckhart Hellmuth

06.12.2012 um 18:15 Uhr

What Mossner called "The Enigma of Hume" stimulated an impressive turmoil of contrasting interpretations in the critical literature. There is no doubt that much of this ambiguity depends on the final section of the Dialogues in which Hume returns to the argument of design. In his paper, Gianni Paganini will consider the context in which the Dialogues stand and refer to one of its main sources, Pierre Bayle. One can then see how Philo, and Hume with him, simplify the complex threesome of atheism, theism and skepticism, seemingly dismissing the first and keeping instead the second and the third. In the final part, Gianni Paganini comes to Philo’s recantation and triesto evaluate Hume’s orientation with regard to theism.

Gianni Paganini ist Professor für Philosophiegeschichte an der Università del Piemonte Orientale und derzeit Visiting Fellow am Center for Advanced Studies.
