"The Light that Failed". A New Debate on Liberalism and Democracy

Podiumsdiskussion mit Prof. Stephen Holmes, Ph.D., Dr. Ivan Krastev und Prof. Michael Kimmage, Ph.D. | Moderation: Prof. Dr. Karsten Fischer (LMU)

18.06.2020 um 19:00 Uhr

In the early 1990s, hopes for the eastward spread of liberal democracy were high. And yet the transformation of Eastern European countries gave rise to a bitter repudiation of liberalism itself, not only there, but also back in the heartland of the West. The book The Light that Failed has provoked immense attention – within the scientific community as well as in reviews and public debates. Its authors, Ivan Krastev and Stephen Holmes will discuss their main propositions: The supposed end of communism turned out to be only the beginning of the age of the autocrat, and the most powerful force behind the wave of populist xenophobia that began in Eastern Europe stems from resentment against the post-1989 imperative to become westernized.

Stephen Holmes ist Walter E. Meyer Professor of Law an der NYU School of Law.
Ivan Krastev ist Vorsitzender des Centre for Liberal Strategies in Sofia und Permanent Fellow am IWM Wien.
Michael Kimmage ist Professor für Geschichte an der Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.
