More than any other part of cuneiform scribal culture, the astral sciences penetrated the Greek world, surviving into and beyond late Antiquity despite the end of cuneiform culture itself. The story of the Hellenistic transmission of Babylonian astral sciences must be reconciled between disparate versions: the ancient one, how Greek and Roman writers saw their astronomical and astrological heritage from the East, and a modern revision, based on cuneiform texts. The modern account, beginning in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, first focused attention on mathematical astronomy as this material was deemed most appropriate for the history of science. More recently, based on an expanded conception of science in antiquity, celestial divination, astrology, and astral magic are seen as equally significant for understanding the fuller extent of the Babylonian scientific cultural legacy to the West.
