Ausschreibung – Fellowships in der CAS Research Group "Magma to Tephra: Ash in the Earth System"

The Center for Advanced Studies at LMU Munich is a forum for intensive international academic exchange. Its purpose is to promote cooperation with national and international Visiting Fellows who work closely on collaborative projects with LMU professors. In order to intensify cooperation between researchers at LMU Munich and leading experts from other universities, the Center has set up a major program, the CAS Research Groups, and herein offers

Fellowships in the Research Group
"Magma to Tephra: Ash in the Earth System"

The CAS Research Group "Magma to Tephra: Ash in the Earth System" was initiated by Professor Donald B. Dingwell (Earth and Environmental Sciences, LMU) and will commence work in October 2018. The CAS Research Group brings together diverse disciplines and experimental approaches to experimentally explore the transition from degassing multiphase viscous magma through the dusty pyroclastic gas to ash as an essential element in the Earth System. We seek to constrain and explain the physicochemical mechanisms which contribute to the nature of explosive volcanism and define the properties of volcanic ash and thereby its role in the Earth System. The aim of this program is to invite to LMU Munich internationally renowned researchers who can contribute significantly to the work of this CAS Research Group.

Visiting researchers will find an open and stimulating research environment in an interdisciplinary setting. The experimental volcanology group at the LMU is a global leader in the development of novel experimental techniques and facilities to understand volcanism. Munich is also emerging as a center for the earth and environmental sciences in Germany, providing excellent lab facilities, as well as an interactive milieu suited for interdisciplinary collaboration. The visits include lab tours in affiliated institutes, talks and a rich exchange environment on novel ideas surrounding the generation and the role of volcanic ash in the Earth System. International collaborators will explore new experimental strategies, benefit from the interdisciplinary background at LMU and contribute their expertise and insights to discussions and the critical assessment of new findings.

The Center for Advanced Studies will provide financing and organizational support for visits of between four weeks and six months during the period between October 2018 and September 2019. Travel and accommodation will be paid for, and an expense allowance or other compensation (according to individual agreement) will be provided to cover operating costs or as recompense for any loss of income sustained. Guests will receive a workspace in the Center according to requirement and availability, and will have access to all its facilities.

Applications should consist of a brief outline (1-2 pages) of the expertise, field of exchange and intended contribution to the CAS Research Group. Applications should also contain relevant credentials and a résumé including a list of the most recent publications. In order to strengthen the role of women in research, female scholars are strongly encouraged to apply.

For any questions on the CAS Research Groups please contact Dr. Lena Bouman.
