Nicholas Gaspelin is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the State University of New York at Binghamton. He received a B.A. from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico. He was recently a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Mind and Brain at the UC Davis, and his research was funded by an individual NRSA award from the National Eye Institute. His research has been published in journals such as Psychological Science, Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, and Trends in Cognitive Science. He recently won a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation to study the relationship between eye movements and covert attention.
Most of Gaspelin’s research has investigated the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying visual attention. Specifically, his research has explored how humans can learn to suppress distraction by physically salient objects, such as brightly colored objects.
He is a Visiting Fellow in July 2022 in the context of the CAS Research Group „Handling Visual Distraction" led by Prof. Dr. Hermann Müller.
