Radiation Oncology

Prof. Dr. Thomas Bortfeld is Professor of Radiation Oncology at Harvard Medical School and chief of the Division of Radiation Biophysics in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Thomas Bortfeld is a German-American physicist who has contributed significantly to the advancement of radiation therapy. The central challenge in tumor therapy is, to administer a therapeutically effective dose in the tumor without exceeding the tolerance threshold in the surrounding normal tissue. Thomas Bortfeld and his team are developing models and algorithms for calculating the best possible treatment strategy, as well as technologies for their clinical implementation. With the method of intensity modulated radiation, which he intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), 30 million patients have been successfully treated worldwide.

Thomas Bortfeld is a Visiting Fellow at CAS during September/October 2023 at the invitation of Prof. Dr. Katia Parodi.
