Visiting Fellow, CAS Research Focus “Speciation”

University of Utah

Genomics and Cell Biology

Nitin Phadnis is Associate Professor at the School of Biological Sciences of the University of Utah.

He takes a multi-disciplinary approach that leverages the power of genetics, genomics and cell biology to understand the molecular basis of speciation in Drosophila. His research is focused on the genetic and molecular basis of genetic conflicts and speciation. In particular, he is interested in understanding the role of genetic conflict involving segregation distorters as a driving force in the evolution of new species. His work involves studying the genetic basis of segregation distortion and male sterility and the molecular basis of hybrid lethality in a variety of Drosophila species. He is also interested in developing genomic strategies to identify hybrid incompatibility genes and studying developmental pathways that are perturbed in species hybrids.

He is part of the CAS Research Focus Group “Speciation” and a Visiting Fellow at CAS in the summer semesters 2024 and 2025.
