Juan Fortea is director of the Memory Unit in the Neurology Department at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona.

His research focus lies on the early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases, Alzheimer’s disease and Down syndrome-related Alzheimer’s disease. He obtained his PhD in the study of preclinical Alzheimer's disease in sporadic and familial cohorts using multimodal MRI and cerebrospinal fluid studies.

Fortea is the principal investigator of several large, influential research projects in this field. He is also the founder and coordinator of the Alzheimer's and Down Syndrome Unit. This unit has developed a worldwide pioneering population-based health plan for adults with Down syndrome in Catalonia, including a comprehensive biomarker research program. This is one of the largest cohorts of adults with Down syndrome in the world.

He is a Visiting Fellow at CAS at the invitation of Prof. Dr. Nikolaos Koutsouleris (Medicine, LMU) and Prof. Dr. Johannes Levin (Medicine, LMU) in the context of the CAS Research Group Tools for Transnational Neuropsychiatric Research.
