International Conference – "Informal Romanticism"

Bringing together an international group of scholars, this conference will be a forum for discussion of Informal Romanticism in its great variety of facets.

06.09.2011 – 08.09.2011

British and European Romantic writers famously experimented with literary form – to the extent of embracing a variety of informal modes, including notebook jottings, diaries, letters, travel journals, marginalia in books, and draft reminiscences. Informal writing of this kind is often autobiographical, centrally concerned with 'drafting' versions of the self and narrating personal development. But informality may also imply sociability, sometimes of a liberating kind: intellectual and sentimental exchange in small groups could overcome boundaries of nation and language. Recent critical work has highlighted the importance of such forms of – especially – nonfictional prose, and as editorial projects such as that on the extensive diaries and reminiscences of Henry Crabb Robinson progress they will come even more sharply into focus. Bringing together an international group of scholars, this conference will be a forum for discussion of Informal Romanticism in its great variety of facets.
