Solids in Ultrafast and Strong Optical Fields: New Phenomena

Solids constitute the basis of contemporary technology: everything serving us from airplanes to tiniest electronic chips is built primarily from solids. Dielectrics such as quartz or glass are one basic type of solids (the other three types being metals, semimetals and semi- conductors), which are good electrical insulators and can be highly transparent and are therefore used in optical elements and devices as well as insulators in electrical and electronic systems. A remarkable new phenomenon was recently discovered, in which for a tiny interval of time a dielectric can undergo a reversible transition to a semimetal when exposed to a strong field of a laser pulse. Mark Stockman will discuss how this opens up a possibility for computing with speeds up to a million times faster than presently possible.

Mark Stockman ist Professor für Physik am Department of Physics and Astronomy der Georgia State University in Atlanta. Zurzeit hält er sich als Visiting Fellow am Center for Advanced Studies auf.
