The 1848 Revolutions, The American Civil War, and The Republican Empire

Referent: Prof. Timothy Mason Roberts | Moderation: Prof. Dr. Michael Hochgeschwender

25.04.2013 um 18:15 Uhr

When the 1848 revolutions failed to create stable democratic governments in Europe, many Americans concluded that their own revolutionary tradition was superior. When violence erupted over the question of slavery in the 1850s, antislavery Americans reinterpreted the menace of slavery in the light of the revolutions and counter-revolutions in Europe. The Civil War, then, was America's answer to the 1848 revolutions; it was arguably the American version of a violent, nation-building revolution. Looking beyond American history, the talk will consider the consequences of the 1848 revolutions as a means to understand the development of territorial empire-building by the United States and France in the second part of the 19th century.

Timothy Mason Roberts ist Professor für Geschichte an der Western Illinois University.
