The Traveling William Tell: An Aspect Of Trans-Atlantic Revolutionary Culture

Referent: Prof. Marc Lerner | Moderation: Dr. Heléna Tóth

19.06.2012 um 18:15 Uhr

Is it possible to write a broadly comparative history of the Age of Revolution? By tracing, in his new project, how the William Tell story was used in different revolutionary contexts, Marc Lerner claims that we can establish a broad, comparative view of revolutionary political culture in Europe, North America and South America. Because of its international prominence, the constructed meanings of the William Tell story can be used to examine the entire Revolutionary Period from 1750 to 1850, a period which, many historians of the era claim, saw the emergence of modern politics and political culture. In his presentation, Lerner will discuss some of the varieties of the Tell story and how different versions can be used to send different political messages, both in German speaking Europe and beyond.

Marc Lerner ist Professor für Geschichte an der University of Mississippi und derzeit Visiting Fellow am CAS.
