In an era of exploding information about genomic sequences, there has been heady speculation about 'personalized genomic medicine' as well as creation of synthetic bioengineered lifeforms. To what extent is our DN A our destiny? And how can powerful technologies now under development enable us to meet pressing needs in human health and society? Current scientific research in genomic sciences can address some of these challenges, but there are still substantial hurdles in understanding our DNA – the 'parts list' is increasingly coming into perspective, but the 'assembly instructions' relating to gene regulation remain enigmatic.

David N. Arnosti ist Professor für Biochemie und Molekular Biologie an der Michigan State University und derzeit Visiting Fellow am CAS.
